Assignment brief – “Vanitas”
For this assignment you are asked to carry out research into the concept of “Vanitas” and from this research devise a creative studio based project. You may choose any approach that is appropriate and you should consider the use of relevant props and sets. Lighting should be planned to create atmosphere and to enhance your visualization of ideas. All practical work should be underpinned by research and analysis of your ideas, which will be documented in your workbook. You will produce 2 significantly different images for this assignment. Work must be produced on a large format camera and you must show evidence of using camera movements appropriately. No post-production digital manipulation will be accepted other than basic colour / contrast correction. Short projects will be undertaken to reinforce the themes and techniques associated with this brief. Stage 1 Attend a verbal briefing and presentation with tutor on project brief . Stage 2 Carry out research into initial ideas, discuss with tutor. Stage 3 Analyse ideas and prepare a concept to work on. Stage 4 Finalise ideas through appropriate research and prepare to create work. Stage 5 Book studio and equipment schedule shooting time to meet deadline. Stage 6 Carry out shoot. Observe and record all H & S requirements for shoot. Stage 7 Process and evaluate work. Discuss with tutor. Schedule re-shoots if required. Stage 8 Prepare final image(s) for presentation in an appropriate manner. Stage 9 Present work to tutors and peer group for assessment. |

I thought this project was going to be a nightmare. As it turns out its been quite an enjoyable experience, one of my weakest genres of photography in my opinion is product/still life and throughout this assignment i have improved my skills in this area. Large format cameras are another thing, at first i hated using these cameras, a lot goes into setting them up and focusing of them, however i think the image quality just about makes up for my previous frustration. I am even contemplating using a large format with digital back, for my fashion/portrait brief and fashion exhibition for cats because the quality of them allows me to print out in sizes much bigger than the normal digital cameras will allow me. I will be trying to take all images on a mix of large and medium format cameras.

Overall i am very pleased with my final images, and i enjoyed this brief a lot more than i expected i would.
