Keep it simple

This assignment 'keep it simple',was one which i had to look at the work of  Michael Kenna and take 5 photographs in a similar style.

I decided to take my images on the west wood in Beverley and to isolate my subjects as Kenna often does.

I enjoyed this assignment actually, i like this photographers work and in future landscape shoots i shall use techniques he uses such as slow shutter speeds, i will have to invest in some ND filers.

Short Studio Assignment 2 Gradient Lighting

For this assignment i had to create an image in the studio which included a gradient in it. I chose this one because i thought it would be a good technique to learn and use because this type of lighting can be used in portraits as well as product and many other types of studio photography.


Final Image

Again for this image i didn't want to create a bland image using normal back lighting to create a gradient so for this shot i used a reflector on a short stand and lit the bottle from underneath the table to create a spot light gradient effect bringing more attention to the prop. I also used a small soft box above to light the main body of the bottle.

Short Studio Assignment 1 Dark Field Lighting

For this assignment we had to look at a lighting technique called dark field lighting, we where asked to create our own work using this style of lighting.

Dark field lighting is basically a studio lighting technique that is mainly used on things such as glass and reflective objects. It is often used to emphasize the shape of an object by illuminating the sides. Dark field lighting is a low key lighting technique and therefore dark backgrounds are used. There are a few different dark field lighting methods but my favorite is to use a soft box at each side of the object both facing in at the object in order to illuminate the sides creating white catch lights.  Another method is too used a large soft box behind the object and use a black piece of card behind the subject to block out the majority of the main light and gives you a black background the black card is smaller than the soft box though so light bleeds around onto the edges of the subject giving the same affect as previously mentioned.

 Final Image

I am pleased with this lighting as it emphasizes the shape and keeps a constant catch light going down both sides. I didn't want to use a glass because it didn't interest me i thought a prop with a label would be look more interesting. I think this image demonstrates dark field lighting well. This technique is use full especially for product photography and if i do any type of this photography in the future shall use this technique.

Ive tried to upload my work 6 times now and each time i upload the photos it crashes, so i will simply have to write my descriptions now and upload the images on a mac at uni tomorrow morning.

Short Assignment - Building Bricks

For my Short Assignment i chose 'Building Bricks' because this assignment sounded interesting. For it i decided to go to one of my favorite places to explore and take photographs, the abandoned Driffield RAF base, a hub for urban decay.

I am pleased with my images overall and are going to explore urban decay more in my seeing the world brief.

Close Up

CLOSE UP

It was a beautiful day today so i decided to take advantage of the bright light and do my first mini assignment 'Close Up'. The relevance of the weather is due to the way i took the photographs, i setup a table with my prop on next to a window that had bright light shining through and i placed my large white reflector in the window to create a nice diffused lighting for my prop.  

I wanted to use something i love and often use as my prop to show the main components of it so i decided to use my beloved Mamiya Rb67 medium format camera.

I used a 70-300 mm macro lens.

 

I am pretty happy with these images, i consider product photography and macro my weakest genre of photography so i found this assignment quite challenging but overall i think these images cover the assignment 'close up'.

Short Assignments

I am going to be set short assignments throughout the year to co-inside with my main projects, this is to improve different areas of my photography. I think this is a good little exercise to do i just hope i have time to do all my work alongside these mini assignments.

Anyway i was given my first mini assignment on Thursday which is due in on Wednesday. I had the choice between 'Hull Fashion', 'Cycle City', '5 Seconds' and 'Close Up'. At first i thought i was going to choose the '5 seconds' assignment or the 'Hull Fashion' one due to my interest in both fashion and portraits however i decided to leave them until i start my Main Fashion/Portrait brief. As it will keep me focused on that main project as its based on the same thing.

Therefore i decided to choose 'Close Up'

As my first post i wanted to point out how easy it was to create a blog using this site however so far i prefer   'Tumblr' as it has a much easier customisation options and has thousands of themes and templates to choose from. Making the overall blog look more professional.
